Drawing At Home

The fourth and fifth graders are in the process of making and learning about sketchbooks. I'm pretty excited about these books. They are a place for the students to practice drawing, brainstorm, work through ideas, and even just doodle. My plan is that they'll do a five minute observational drawing at the beginning of each art class. I can't wait for the time when they start looking back over old drawings and recognize their progress.

Since we're going to be doing so much drawing at school, I've started thinking about drawing at home with my family. We've just started "Family Drawing Time." I think it's going to be a really great way to have quiet, productive time together. If you're interested in learning more about family drawing time, and think you might like to try it at your house, please read this article.

i love sketchbooks! i had my 7th graders start each session with 5 minutes in their sketchbooks, too - but i had ideas for them - sometimes it was free-draw, but they tended to like the ideas better - i think most of them needed a jumping off point, and i would have had a mutiny on my hands if we would have done observational drawings every day! (7th graders, you know!) some of the ideas are silly, but i'm sure i still have the list somewhere if you want it!

I love the site! Fourth Grade feels so lucky to have you in our classrooms once a week!! The sketchbooks are a big hit and the kids love them!

I have to send this link to our art teacher. This is too wonderful. I feel so cheated! You need to move here!

you've been tagged on my blog

you don't have to play if you don't want to, I won't be offended.

One of our teachers at Iron Springs commented on the sketch books. She said the students just take them everywhere and sketch. Thank you for teaching our students to draw past the second grade level!

Wow, what an amazing idea. I used to draw with my older brothers when I was a child, and have very fond memories of it. I have never thought of having "drawing time" with my own children. Thank you for the new idea and link!
